Description

As part of an ongoing investigation, data were collected that reflected current rates of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use during the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 academic years. In total, 1108 high school students were surveyed providing contemporary rates of ATOD use in a predominately White, middle-class, suburban population. Fifty-eight percent of the population used alcohol, 27% marijuana, 12% tobacco and 5% or less used other illicit drugs. Substance users acknowledged its negative impact on their school work, family relationships, peer group choices and intentions to control use. These acknowledgments put adolescent users at risk for development of alcoholism and may be related to the rise in college binge drinking. Professionals working in the substance abuse field are aware that teenagers continue to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) at alarming rates. However, certain substances rise and fall in popularity over time (Johnston, Bachman & O'Malley, 1982; 1993; 2002). For example, the so called club drugs (such as "ecstasy") became popular at the turn of the century and marijuana rates, which had dropped, doubled in the mid 1990's (Johnston, Bachman & O'Malley, 2002).
